Chapter TwentySix

‘She saw me.’

I pace back and forth in my room as I consider what this means, consider my next move in the days to come.

‘She saw me and I froze like a fucking fool. I’m so weak.’

All this time trying to find a way in, trying to keep my promise to Loísia, wasted with one foolish move. I slam my fist against the wall, my shadows coiling around my knuckles and following the cracks spreading up the wall. As I pull away, they disappear into the darkness.

‘Barilius won’t be pleased when he discovers that the girl can see through shadows,’ I consider. ‘Either that or his interest in her will grow,’ I add, my mood souring further.

But how had she seen past my shields? No one could, not unless…

I think back over the times I'd spent in her presence, of all the times she could have accidentally shown me glimpses of any power, any proof that she was like me. I shake the thought away when I come up empty-handed.

“She would have to be as powerful as me to hide in plain sight, and even then Barilius would have noticed the moment he laid eyes on her,” I tell myself.

I think back to the maze and my orders to follow the girls in. I knew it was to be enchanted as a part of the trial, but I hadn’t realised what the enchantment was until I came across the beasts and my blood had run cold. When I’d finally come across Nesryn, Reverie and Vena, their creatures had been ripped apart by goddess-knows-what and Vena had been lost.

The look on Nesryn’s face when our eyes had met stays with me even now, cutting through me as fiercely as it had done then. She shouldn’t have been able to see me, and yet she had. I knew she had.

“Fuck!” I growl.

I slam my fist into the wall again in anger, this time smearing blood as the cracks climb higher up the wall. My temple twitches from the pressure of my clenched jaw and shadows coil around the edges of my vision.

I shake my hand once as the pain ebbs through my knuckles as I compose myself, breathing in slowly as I straighten my tunic and smooth back my hair. Determination and anger run through me as my gaze turns towards the door.
